he weathered appearance of the background on this base is from a process of enhancing the grain. Using a gouge, the spaces between the lines of grain were laboriously hollowed from the top of the base to the bottom. Then each of the troughs created was sanded and rounded and a thin wash of stain applied to give it some depth.
This results in the background having sculptural presence allowing it to participate with the carving in the overall effect. This emphasis of the carving within the context of the wood grain unifies the whole into a celebration of plant and material.
he softness of the grain effect can be seen here again. The background color has been taken a shade up to sillouette the foliage which has been washed in a softer tone.
he switch supports are hand made of solid brass and flush mortised into the wood.
he cluster sockets have been designed, machined and soldered together for a custom fit to the shade.
As with all the brass on the lamp, the cluster assembly was chemically dipped and heated to produce an aged patina.
he kettle and trivet monogram.
ll the shade joinery is pegged. The lantern rings are all half mortised into the upright support posts. This results in a surprisingly strong assembly.
his particular paper has a nice figure to it.
arved with a single stem bloom on the front side, a branch emerges on the left carrying more foliage and a bud. The top face of the shade rafters flute out to horizontal at the base and vertical at the upper rim to mimic the dynamic curve of the leaves .
Dimensions:
- Total heigth 23".
- From table to bottom of shade 17 1/4".
- Shade width 16". Base width at top 6".
Due to the closeness of the light bulbs (not shown) to the shade paper, only CFL bulbs, which operate at low temperature, can be used on this lamp.
he finish on this lamp has been slightly distress/aged as exemplified here on the post, ring and rafter edges. Crevises have been left with a little stain and some of the surfaces show very minor dings. All this is well and intentional.
Many thanks go to Andrew Caruthers, violin maker, in Santa Rosa California for taking the time to introduce me to some of his amazing finishing processes.
While most of the lamps are made with the foot integral to the base this foot is an add-on piece.
his is an example of my signature "Lantern Lamp". It incorporates a small night-light in the lower "lantern" portion of the shade. It evolved as a solution to one of our lighting needs. We found it a convenience to have a low-level source of light to make the house navigable after hours. It has been such a wonderful addition to the ambiance of our home that I decided to incorporate it as a design element in the lamps.
