he base has been carved from spalted cherry. A much desired presence, spalting produces a beautiful effect of highlighted grain patterns.
ntegrating an intimate experience of nature within a purposeful context, I apply attention to detail to perfect the artistic and functional elements of each lamp. This is what makes every lamp a unique and soulful experience. My goal is to create lamps that are pleasing to the eye, and provide a quality of light to enhance the ambiance of the room. They are functional sculpture and as such have their own practical reason for existing and "occupy their space with a purpose."

he cherry wood has been softly finished giving it an almost marble- like patina. And in between the lacquer finishes, translucent colors have been applied to the carving to just slightly tone it up from the background and give the lower carved areas a little depth.
his closed bud chrysanthemum lamp has generous carvings that wrap around the base. Two separate plants are displayed each different from the other with multiple stems and leaves. There are no blooms to disturb the drama of the leaves and buds. This is a summer scene, with the promise of fall blooms to come.
palting occurs when moist wood is exposed to certain fungi; either when the tree is still in the ground or after it has been harvested and left outside for curing. The fungi concentate in the grain of the wood and darken it.
Once the wood has been dried the fungi are no longer active and the spalting process stops. With the wood sealed in finish, the spalting is preserved to enhance the presence of the grain.
