       his is an example of an earlier style.  The design was inspired by        outdoor stone garden lanterns.   Known as tachi-doro or garden pedestal lanterns in Japan, I had long admired their solid presence that seemed to spring from the ground.   Iconic yet functional, they were made as lighting elements for the tea garden.  

This lamp is out of cuban mohagany and features curved rafters and a four ring lantern.  The 6 bands at bottom are turned bamboo wraps which mirror and expand on the concave reverse bands at the top.
